Both of those systems are so beautiful. It brings tears to my eyes.

Well, no, not really. ;)

The only thing that I do not like about those computers is that thing called "wireless". It's slower (much slower) than old-fashioned cable (or fibre-optics (which are getting cheaper)), less secure, has problems with interference probably more than "noise" problems on normal twisted-pair, and is relatively useless in a home environment.

The only places where I can really see it working is a laptop-intensive work environment (and even then, desktop computers should be hard-wired) or a work environment which is really crowded and has no room for cable.

Wireless bandwidth of 54 might seem good, but generally only half of that is available to any user. This is because of an extra signal that needs to be sent out at all times during a connection. (Or something like that)

Forgive my rant. :D

Ahem, let me clarify. In 90% of my time (all that I am not in blasted meetings that is) the little button that says wireless is set to "off", and the little orange light is off.
In other words, I agree with you entirely.

wireless rocks

I'm in what they call the "Laptop Pilot" at NCSU, meaning I get to take my 'puter to some classes including both my E courses (101 and 115) and Calc. 1... I usually take it to chem too, 'just cause it gets insanely boring.. I cant keep focus.. I'm one out of 210 students and the teacher uses a powerpoint on a huge wall monitor.. thing must be a 15 foot screen atleast.. teacher talks well, but.. after about an hour I drift.. mind goes on standby..

and the library (and a couple other buildings) are almost completly covered in a wireless bubble, so you can take your laptop, sit at a table, desk or couch and use the internet as long as you have battery life.. mine is about 2 hours.. pretty poor, but ah well..

IBM Thinkpads are ze best laptops.. >> than dell...

I agree, for bumming around, wireless rocks. :P
But on a serious note, I used to think Thinkpads were the best. Now I know Toshiba is the best!

Yeah, Wireless is good for laptops. It allows laptop portability with connectivity.

But in a desktop environment... Ug. :P

Oh, and for some randomness:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)

(Gotta love useless Firefox extensions. Otherwise known as fooling Windows update into thinking I'm using IE 6. :D)

well, yeah
if your computer is stationary then it makes more sence to just plug it up.. usually anyhow..

I helped setup my family's home network.. we have three computers in the house not counting mine: an old P3 HP desktop, my brother's laptop (toshiba), and my stepdad's laptop (dell). I choise to do wireless simply 'cause it's less hassle and costs about the same. There are, ofcourse, no ethernet ports in the walls and it's a huge pain to poke holes in the walls and run cords along the inside. And we didnt want cords running down the hallways or ceiling.

wireless isnt that bad, but developers still have a long ways to go with it...

*goes off to look for Devari's extension*
I've begun to completly detest IE.. firefox is the only way ta go fer windows.. I've heard Safari for macs isnt bad...

but yeah.. IBM and Toshiba are good, my brother's laptop is fairly sturdy and well built.. I like my Thinkpad better though..
The one thing I dont like about it is the IBM service partitian.. takes up 7 gigs out of my 30 (*wants new HDD for christmas ;) *) and while it does some useful things, it doesnt do enough to take up 7 gigs.. I'm pondering removing it...

IBM's service policy rocks though.. I must have shaken my 'puter too badly while bikeing to class (it rides in my backpack) and it messed up.. refused to run through its POST.. so I called IBM.. the next day a box arrived, posting prepayed, I stuck my 'puter in and sent it back. This was on a friday. I got it back Tuesday @ 9:00am with the systemboard replaced and it working fine.

*cheers*

Wonderful!
I must say, Toshiba laptops are great, but their service isn't the best...
I've removed the service partitions from ALL laptops I have touched. =P Maybe not so smart, but hey...
