If the game determines that you are "online" when an attack against you occurs, there will be a little asterisk beside your name on the News page. I've decided for determining 'online'-ness exactly in the way it shows up on the scores page, not by things like actual turn use or things. If you see an asterisk beside a warlord on the scores page and attack them, the asterisk will show up in the News.
If for example they opted to uncheck 'Show As Online', then there will be no asterisk on the scores page, and it will not appear on the News page.
Later on we may refine the concept of online-ness as shown on the scores page, to thwart campers and such -- Veranor is considering this for the next release -- but all you need to know is that if they are online on the scores or search page -- or the attacking dropdown for that matter -- then the asterisk will show up on the News page, to your possible chagrin.
