I looked through COG and BFR and saw the following races:

BFR:

Otter
Hare
Vole
Mole
Squirrel
Shrew
Badger


COG:

Badger
Mole
Otter
Shrew
Hedgehog
Squirrel
Mouse



Mouse and Hedgehog were the rarest of all, with only one occurrence each - both on COG!

I cannot understand why Hedgehog is so little used, but the one that really leaped at at me was Mouse. MOUSE?!

I mean, what does it have going for it - not much. On the other hand, there isn't really much going against it. I can see why nobody uses it, as usually a strategy is all about some sort of specialization - somthing the Mouse does not have.

However, can anyone think of a worthwhile strategy for an old mouser? Surprisingly, it wouldn't be too bad for a hawk-looter, although Hedgehog is probably the better choice there. Even Hare isn't too bad for hawk-loot, perhaps better than Mouse.

I'm rambling here, so back to the point - is there any viable niche/strategy for Mouse? Should the race bonuses be changed, or is a fairly evened out race a good idea?

Mouse is great for admins -- it's the default choice.

Hedgehog is good as is. It's a underused but great choice for a hawk-looter. Maybe squirrel is better for hawking (or, maybe not), but Hedgehog is so much better for hawk-loot. Second best hawk and much better market bonus then squirrel insures that.

Maybe Mouse need to have neutral to hawk and indy. Or at least one +5% positive, probably indy.

One thing that strikes me as odd is that I would think of Mice as being relatively numerous. Yet, it has a deficit in Industry.

But perhaps an almost completely balanced out race is what we need...

Never really bought troops all that often, so haven't seen the effects of hedgehog bonus to prices. But what's income +10 doing there, if hedgehog gets hawk-cash not worker-cash. Or does that affect the hawk loot yield and I just never noticed?

No. I'm just pointing out for any BM hawk strategy, Hedgehog is quite possibly the best. Although loot is effected by magic bonus and Squirrel therefore is better in terms of buying more troops, a defensive hawk-looter could be better off with Hedgehog.

However, hedgehog is worse at offense then a squirrel, so if the person ever did need to attack with troops, they'd be better off squirrel. I kinda doubt that people are going to go unbroken with a hawk strat and a 10% def bonus, even buying a bunch of black market troops...

You don't need to go unbroken. Just have troops for an offense to retal.

But then the +10 def isn't so useful, and squirrels two primary bonuses beat hedgehog's one.

I know, but you've got a - 16% to attack. And FAF has no super offensive troop. Your best choice would be to go mice, I guess. Easy to buy.

Even someone buying daily would still use squirrel, not hedgehog. After all, a hedgehog's price is more or less to equal to a squirrel's extra cash, and the squirrel still has more runes.

I'm just pointing out that Hedgehog IS a viable alternative and a pretty good race.
