For me, I like XFCE because it is relatively lightweight, is configurable enough, and the panel is lovely.

I use KDE because I think it looks polished, runs well, and has just about every application you will ever need under the vast umbrella of the project. I couldn't care less about the "less free" arguments put forward against KDE. For all intents and purposes relating to KDE, Qt is fine.

I'm a bit different with applications themselves, though. I prefer the open source model over closed source. But among open source, perceived "freedom" matters little to me.

GNOME I dislike because of the excessive bloat I have encountered. It looks worse than KDE, is no more responsive, and is a memory hog. To be fair, I've only used an old version on Red Hat 7.x and 2.6 on Mandriva 10.1, but I did use it on Mandriva for a while. I'm thinking of giving it one more try when I reinstall K/Ubuntu on a bigger partition, but so far I have not liked it.

Oh, and, Distro of choice?
