I suppose this could be a nice central topic for the sporadic discussions of Linux browsers (mostly, it seems, between Beatles and I).

So, anyway...

I ran some tests on the browsers on my computer. The following ranks (roughly) the performance levels:

Top-Notch: Opera, Konqueror, and Galeon
Middle: Epiphany
Er...: Firefox
WTF?: Mozilla (Seamonkey)

Konqueror is actually, surprisingly, very good. KHTML actually appears somewhat faster than Gecko in quite a few areas. Galeon is by far the best Gecko browser.

Firefox does an awful job, compared to what I would expect. On Windows, it is the best I have tried. But, on Linux - ug.

KDE Wallet is a very good system. On the flipside, my Firefox Password Manager is seriously borked.

I have faith for Firefox 1.1 (seeing as it has the new Gecko and all...), but it seems it has some catching up to do - even compared to its cousins!

You forgot the fastest and my favorite: elinks. It's even got rudimentary javascript support, and man, is it blazing over X! Plus it means you can get nice formatted tables to paste into text fields later. I used it for testing today; what with the colors and all it's almost indistinguishable from mainstream browsers on simple sites; and is pretty amazing at even more complex sites.

But: great review otherwise. Galeon and Konqueror are the only two that will complete local URLs for you too.

Yeah, Galeon and Konqueror are great.

I'm a graphics whore. Can't read webcomics in (e)Links. ;)

Firefox also runs really poorly with other programs running. Konqueror takes a minimal hit, but FF crashes and burns.

Konqueror works like IE with FTP.. which is really really appriciated..

Firefox is still one of the better browsers, I just like its user interface..

yay for webcomics..

Yes, Firefox certainly has the best UI of them all. Konqueror is just unappealing, Opera is way overdone, Galeon and Epiphany are quirky (Galeon has a horrid icon... Epiphany uses the site's icon as the browser icon... gah). Elinks lacks a solid URL bar.

Konqueror in general will behave very nicely with a multitude of protocols, due to kio_slaves, and because it's also a file manager.

Yeah, the only point FF scores is over the fact that Konq, Opera, Galeon, and Epiph are really, really ugly.
