What exactly is sharing in the clan section? What are you sharing, how do you share/stop sharing? I see that 2 other people in my clan are marked as "sharing:YES" while I'm marked as "sharing:NO", but I don't see anything to turn any kind of sharing on or off. I've donated to the clan treasury, so I know that can't be it.

Sharing is "Use Troops for Shared Clan Defense".

10% of each person's forces help defend their clanmates, while taking a 10% offense hit.

To share your forces, go the the "Main" page under the "Clans" heading on your Menu bar. Then you will see the button to share your forces.

Sharing forces makes it harder for other empires to break you (depending on how many forces your clansmates are sharing).

I thought that the shared defense thing was an automatic result of being in a clan.

The reason it is not automatic is because many people choose not to have shared defense on. I personally rarely use shared defense because it gives you a 10% penalty to your attack. If you're in a small clan it's usually not big enough to make a difference, if you are in a large clan it will help a bit.

I won't say I'd never have shared defense on, but it would be rare.
I know the voices in my head arn't real but they usually have some pretty good ideas.

Is there any time limit on turning it on/off? Why not turn it off before you start attacking, then turn it back on afterward.

There is a brief 100-minute time in which you have to leave it on. Thus you couldn't unshare and attack, unless you logged in one and a half hours before you actually wanted to attack, which isn't worth the effort.
