Q&A: Strategies 101

Strategies and active Q&A's concerning game mechanics should be done here. (Note: this is not a general "help how do I do..." type of forum. It is strictly for strategies and game mechanics)

But of course. Welcome, dear lad. Take a seat there by the window. And feel free to ask any questions without raising your hand.

*Ruddertail enters just behind Taris* Ah, I remember these classes. I used to be a student in this one... now I almost know enough to be a professor. Well, it won't hurt to hear what ideas they're tossing around. Maybe interject a few myself, eh?

Actually I'd much prefer if Prof. Ruddertail, Prof. Devari, or Visiting Prof. Nuclear Raunch would teach them... I'll just do the administrative side of things, shall I?

*steps into classroom looking for a seat, notices airplane to late and lurches backwards to avoid it slipping and landing on his butt*

ouch! *smiles when he sees turock* Oh Hi Turock!

Professor, I was looking for some help with strategies and diplomacy. I am pretty much a hawker but I have had to build up a lot of guards recently and I usually mess up when demolishing and rebuilding. I constantly lose 42% or more of my troops. Do you have any fancy calculators or suggestions to help me when I am mass building.

Also, Landgrabbing in the game I play pretty much always provokes a war. Whether I attack once or 20 times. Is there a diplomatic way to do a land grab without provoking full out war. How many times should I attack not to ruffle feathers. I would just scout if I could but its way too costly. I lose so many more troops when I do that.

I think I handle my army and stuff pretty well but I am still making lots of mistakes.

*clears throat* I believe I can answer this one. When hawking, you want to lose land. This gives you a better ratio, which in turn, gives your hawks a better chance to succeed against all others.

But when building tons of er...buildings, it is safer to build in small amounts if you have limited cash. So, you could have half your land in Orchards so you continue to make food during the demolishing of the other half of your land and building of guards. Then you sell this food on the Bazaar, and if you wish, convert the Orchards to Guards with the cash you just made by selling food. (May not work as well with the Squirrel race because of the - food production rate)

Landgrabbing should consist of 5-20 attacks (depending how desperate you are for land, and how much land the person you are attacking has). Send a message to the person explaining that this was just a landgrab and you have no intentions of making war with them. But most of the time on FAF, people understand that you are just grabbing land and not indicating that you want a fight to the death (unless they are a complete and total butthead). But if you have problems with this on WOA, contact the top guy, I'm sure he'll help you out if someones being a butthole. And on BFR, contact Timber Rattlesnake (Rudder), he may help you. ;)

On WOA, 7 attacks is a landgrab. Anything more may be taken as a sign of agression, and is normally retaled at least 1:1, if not more. If it's only 8 or 9, probably 1:1, if you hit somebody 15 times, you'll probably get max back.

Generally, you don't want to bother with guards when hawking. If you want to defend your land, you're better off taking your cash and buying troops with it, it'll just get sacked anyway.

But, like Urran said, you want to lose land if you're hawking. Supposedly. I always found my looting yeilds were better with more land, rather then less, and as few people had enough cash to make stealing worth it, having an insane ratio on low land didn't matter, and rather have a decent one on good land so I could loot...
