Karma reflects what kind of person you've been on the forum. Being a good member (being helpful, making suggestions, etc.) makes it go up, while being a bad member (swearing, excessive rudeness, extreamly bad SPAG, etc.) makes it go down.

As for how it goes up and down, we admins can adjust it at will, based on our evaluation of the person, either for a specific action, or for a general attitude displayed throughout the time you're here. Speaking of which... *ups Taris's karma*
