For good spy/leader/hawk races, may I suggest the Basque? Since so little is known about their historical origins, we could take great liberties with their attrabutes.

Then again, they weren't ever really powerful, were they?

The question I have is - do we go with this theme? I like it!

What we seem to be getting into here are mostly specifics. Might as well go for this as the official theme, in my humble opinion.

I like the feel of this theme, but we do not have to stick with the exact historical references. The Basques sounds good, we could also throw in the Atlanteans.

Atlanteons, now there can be a spy race. They dissapeared, they were way scientifically advanced, and we know nothing about them. They could be responsible for all kinds of stuff that the other civilizations thought were mother nature or weird coincedence.

That's my nomination for an excellent spy race.

Yes, so each race is better in one thing than in everything else, for the rest of the stuff, u have to accuire it through experiance.

Re: Atlantis - I think the main point here IS to keep it historically accurate.

I would think so. If we had chosen a Mythological theme, Atlantis might work. In this case, I don't think it makes much sense.

Perhaps the Basque people would work. They never were a major power, but they might work for a spy race.

How about the Mauryan Empire for a spy tribe/nation? It wasn't quite Mediterranean/Mesopotamian, but was a large civilization that was around after Alexander. I'd put their spies first (even though they were probably better at commerce and trade), and then balance the them with a lower military score.

Hrm... Greek leadership on that, offshoot of the Seleucid influence in the near east.

Hard to say what historical period we're going for here... i pondered just before the conquests of Alexander to keep it balanced (aka so Macedon/Greece dont Pwn to much)

You definitely want to keep it before Alex. Or pretty far after him. Too bad your not setting it right at the end of Western Roman rule, you could have the Byzantines as a spy race, and the numbers actually would prolly work out better. Romans were in the process of being overrun by the Huns/various barbarians by that point.

But since you aren't I would suggest the Hebrews/Jews as a new race, and the spy race. Ever since the Diaspora they have been pretty heavily involved in spy activities for pretty much everyone, right up until Israel got remade by the UN at the end of WW2.

We could switch to end of Roman rule, if it'd be more interesting.

It most likely would, the military powers weren't anywhere near as unbalanced as in Alexander's time. I'll get back with a short list of the most prominent tirbies/empires of the time.
