Peasants, or Serfs (even thought that term is a bit European) would work best, in my opinion. You can still tax them within inches of their lives. :D

The real question in my mind is - why are we using acres as a measurement of land? Why not a smaller amount? It never made sense to me that you can only build one market for every acre. ;)

Serfs are a relatively modern term, as are peasants. I'm sure they were called something different in ancient times, although I don't know what.

Excellent question... we might need to rename acres. Although, what to? Towns?

Why not something along the lines of Craftsmen or Farmers? Even Workers isn't too bad. While Slaves did a lot of the dirtiest work, most of the workers were, if memory serves, free or semi-free people.

That's an interesting point with Acres -> Towns. When you consider that production would occur from towns and farmland, it makes sense to measure land in the amount of useful land, not vast tracts of wilderness that would likely go untamed.

's a lot lof towns.. get 10,000..
then again..
scout would have to be changed
and instead of construct you could have convert, like convert to markets, barracks, etc..

"plot" might work

helot, villein ?

helot wouldnt be bad, might confuse some of the players though.. serf is a word most people know

On a different note, Neo, are you happy with the race changes now, would you sign off on them?

Races are fine. I wanted Hebrews/Jews and Neo-Babylonians.. but the Neo-Babs didn't have a navy, and Hebrews are too small really for the scale we're at.

Villages, not towns. Town would have 1000 people at minimum, village anywhere from 10 to 500. And the primary workers of the time depends on what work, and what society, for example, Athenians had peasant farmers who were also free citizens and manned the hoplite phalanx armies, whereas the Spartans had every single one of their male citizens as permanent soldiers, and the helots (oppressed Messenian slaves) did everything for them. I would suggest Changing tents to villages and just leaving it as "workers".

As to the rest of the buildings, the current agricultural building can be changed to whatever, but I would like it better if we left the stuff as is for the most part as far as function.

Light Infantry, Archers, Heavy Infantry, Ships.. or we could find specifics, I suppose. Me and Neo can get most of the names for military units if you really want them. Greeks would be Hoplite Phalanx, Slingers/Archers, and Triremes though. They had exactly one kind of main fighting unit until Alexander, when they got cavvy. Macedon would be Phalanx, Archers, Cavalry, and Triremes. I'll get back to you on the rest.

Beatles: No, mass light infantry doesn't sound silly. Neither does "ranged units", or "ships". I was just saying that "agricultural buildings" sounds a bit funny. But perhaps just a difference between orchards and farms?

For buildings, I might think Tents --> Villages (since towns are too big) and Camps either stay the same, or become tents, since barracks don't work...

I like the idea of "plots". Acres is a little large, while "plots" can be a difinitive unit that can also theoretically stretch, from a little plot to put a market on, to a big plot to put a village on.

Hmm, looking at races, I see there's nobody with a good indy bonus. Unless I misread a + as a -, or a + was mistyped as a -...

Rudder -- just so, I was trying to say that that does NOT sound silly. So it was a great idea.

Please feel free to edit the races to satisfy the game balance. Neo'll look over the stuff anyways to ensure the basic historic attributes he defined in the other threat. And I'm sure Volkov will look over it too. So please, make the changes as you see fit.

Plots sounds a little weird at first, but I guess it could work.

I think we're getting confused. So I'll say that I think "agricultural buildings" sounds rotten and needs a catchier generic name. However, to me "light infantry" sounds fine as a generic name.

Er, yes, that's what I was saying.

But the last post was in reference to the lack of a good indy race. Or, for that matter, probably a good cashing race, though I didn't really look closely. But the only one with a really good income is a neutral to bazzar...

Farms. Just call them farms. And Light Infantry sounds fine to me.

Trouble with Orchards is, in this time period you are primarily talking about olive trees, which are not a primary food source, they are good for olive oil, which is good to sell, but not to eat so much. So Farms is better.
