Since the Phoenicians traded extensively, it would also make sense for them to be great spies. Part of the efficacy of spies is just getting them someplace. Still, it seems two people favor Phoenicians to be cashers, so I guess it makes sense.

So Phoenician==Casher and Greek==Hawker?

Seriously though, why not have the Phoenicians as strong in both areas. They balance out in the end...

I mean, their Offense, Defense, and Industry are AWFUL! Plus, I don't think there is any rule about a race having to be specialized in only one area!

Except that it might make them conceivably too strong. The corollary comes up: If one race can Hawk and Cash, then why would anyone pick the only-Cash race?

Beatles is right.

But shouldn't the Greeks be the military folks? Wasn't Sparta one of the best militaries during the era?

In this case, because the Cash race could:

A) Have a bigger cash bonus
B) Have a much smaller penalty to offense/defense, or none at all.
C) Have none or a smaller cost penalty.

Actually, Neo & Volkov say the Greeks /weren't/ all that hot militarily. So that's all right.

Oh, if you take out C) for the combo-race, then they aren't really so cashers at all, are they?

I wish Raunch was here, he knows all these strats inside and out.

Hm? Cashers need a consumption penalty?

Greeks by this time where no longer as powerful as they once were. Sparta, in its heyday, pwned everyone, but by the time Macedon rose to prominence, thye had lost their hold on the helots and were declining in power, as were the Athenians. By the time of Alexander, all of Greece was either directly controled by Macedon, or vassal states, paying large tributes to them. This is just before Alexander, otherwise Macedon would pwn everyone, but even so, the Greeks have lost most of their power by this time. Still have colonies everywhere though, so good for hawking. Phoenicians are too, but really they were just obscenely rich, they could pay off anyone who went after them, and didn't need spies so much.

Thanks, Captain Obvious. :/

I meant: 1. How is the getting of the cash achieved?

Less importantly, but still: is the cash always just used to buy troops?

Macedon is strong on O not D... they never did well when faced with an enemy shock group... ;-)

Always moving forward, never stopping...

---

Thats not to say they couldnt defend, but against a coordinated and effective enemy who was dedicated (like our Bactrian//Indian frineds with their hefalumps) they were very poor.

And I take back the concept of a Macedonian phalangite, they existed, but they were more focussed on the Thracian style pikeman, not the greek hoplite.

By the time of Alexander, all of Greece was either directly controled by Macedon, or vassal states, paying large tributes to them.
"It can be said that Phillips gold, not Phillips armies, conquered the once glorious cities of Greece"

Food for thought.
