America has a high divide between the upper and lower classes. People who get an American masters or higher education get a world-class education. Your average person who attends highschool, community college, or maybe even college in the case of some institutions, does not get much of an education even compared to say highschool in Hungary.
And? The problem isn't education, its how much manufacturing workers get in pay. Not everyone needs to have a college education. 'Specially if your building cars, or airplanes. Years ago, my old man worked in one of the now-closed papermills. He made a good amount of money. Education isn't everything...

The same goes for culture. America has produced wonderful culture, I love many of your authors (among my favorites) and even some of your film directors/actors. The cream is great, but the vast average of American culture is pretty terrible, as is the average social attitude towards it.

I agree with Kraken, but not the %. Can't verify it. Come to Michigan for a week or two. Its different that where you live. I find it hard to have a terrible culture. I mean, even if it isn't great...its still culture. More or less, why is there culture so poor? That is what makes America so diverse. If everywhere was a high culture zone...it'd be pretty lame.

One thing on the wire tapping... Personally, I think if they would have asked first...more people would have said yes than no. This is one of those, we didn't have a choice issues. If being able to listen to my phone convos is going to reduce the chance of terrorism by .000001%... that its good. In fact...any reduction is good.

The problem is too one of education. Not everyone needs an education to be polite, kind, or open-minded. However, an education is somewhat of a substitute for these qualities in people who don't have them by birth. And most people don't -- commendations to your father.

Why would Michigan be that radically different from Seattle? If it were, I'd likely have heard of it, right?

Stats are here. Those are all crimes, I did see somewhere today that violent crimes were about half of Canada's, but it had no info on anywhere else so I didn't post it.

Freen: You bring up a good point on wages. When I graduated high school I was going to either be an electrician or a psychiatrist. Accounting for student loans, time in school for each, wages in school for each, and retirement psychiatry was 2% more over the course of a career. That's also not accounting for inflation which would favor electrician wages since there's more money upfront that way.

What about if we did random raids on houses? That might reduce terrorism by .000001%. Or what about GPS implanted on every man woman and child? What about if we randomly checked every financial record a person has? Or did random strip searches? Or bugged houses at random? Or if we revoked the 2nd ammendment? Or the 4th? What is your threshhold? Or do you have one?

Beatles: Culture does vary quite a bit in different areas. Dialect, mannerisms, food, the way they think, music, pace of life, quite a bit of difference really. I frequently work with people from other states (I have at least 1 friend in every single state in the union) and I'm constantly amazed at how little we know of each other. Probably a third of my diet is foods that most of them haven't even heard of, and likewise for their diets. Except the South of course, where I know what it is but didn't know people actually ate that. :)
*Points at Kraken's possum lasagna*

*gags*

*Laughs at the thought of Kraken saying it's better than real Italian lasagna*

EDIT: If you want to see a language barrier put a New Yorker with someone from the South. Good God, you just about have to put someone with a relatively neutral accent to interpret for them.

The Kraken, which is found primarily in Scandinavian myth, was a huge sea creature. It was said to lie at the bottom of the sea for a long time and then it would rest at the surface....Like the Midgard serpent in the Norse myths, the Kraken was supposed to rise to the surface at the end of the world.

Your right Nuke, that would help, but I think you all knew what I meant. ^_^ Evil government raids...Pah. There is a line somewhere between rational and non. Phone calls...Your very close., but raids. No. I don't want them in my house.
Why would Michigan be that radically different from Seattle? If it were, I'd likely have heard of it, right?
O_o...Nope. I never heard of anything different about life in Indiana or Ohio, but wow are the people different. Iowa is personally the oddest for me. People wave at you when you are driving...I was like...Buh? The south is much different from the north as much as the East is different that the west. I don't much care for highly populated areas, so I like whats going on around me. Its truely a matter of preference.

Kraken: I'm not so sure that's a stereotype. It's about as much a stereotype as saying that Italians eat Pasta. Maybe not each one specifically, but the group as a whole does. About your links, you'll have to wait til later as I'm off to the doc right now.

Freen: I know it's over the top, but the point is at some point you have to draw the line. Personally I feel the Constitution is as good a place as any.

Actually a CERN thing about URL's was there. *laughs*.

The culture does vary from West coast to Midwest. Having been both places, I can say that with certainty. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but there are cultural differences. Especially between inner city and country. America is by no means homogenous. Thinking that is equivalent to thinking that all Muslims are terrorist extremists.

I didn't say it was homogenous. Merely that if it too had produced culture that was somehow more outstanding than the one I experience locally, I would have heard about it. That's harder to dispute. After all, I've never been to Britain except for an overnight stay on a flight, yet I have heard a lot about their culture.

Why would you have heard about it? Not all great cultures are well known. Besides the West Coast tends to focus on itself.

It's difficult to get an objective answer either way; so I propose we again agree to disagree. :)

Lo L, this is true. I agree, let's disagree. Lo L.

[edit: Why can't we have"Lo L"? It sometimes fits better]

With all 5 fingers... none of that Californian Hello stuff. :D

And I agree with you 100% of the way. I don't think that the government should tap phone...just saying that I'd like to understand why they do, and then tell them my feelings. But your right...
