Anyone know how much truth there is in this?

It's also legal in many EU states, but I can't find a link just now.

Slashdotters offering legal advice... Beware... </evil voice>
  (a) Interested Copyright Parties. - The royalty payments
deposited pursuant to section 1005 shall, in accordance with the
procedures specified in section 1007, be distributed to any
    interested copyright party -
        (1) whose musical work or sound recording has been -
          (A) embodied in a digital musical recording or an analog
musical recording lawfully made under this title that has been
        distributed, and
          (B) distributed in the form of digital musical recordings or
analog musical recordings or disseminated to the public in
transmissions, during the period to which such payments
        pertain; and

        (2) who has filed a claim under section 1007.
What I'm wondering is where do I sign up for the free money? Sure there is the detail of getting my music published somewhere first, but given a few years (and perhaps a Dvorak concerto) I should be able to do that ;) . So what if I am majoring in CS at a school that isn't particularly noted for its music department?

Of course you would still have to deal with the Serial Copy Management System which is afforded DMCA style protection in this act.

evil record labels................

this has been an ongoing thing in the states, the record labels have been fighting, to be the rulers of music for decades.
years back, when an artist first busted free, they produced cassette tapes, before that in reels, some sought out black market vinyl record makers.
they didn’t infringe that way

now a days we have internet, how do you think this would effect all those self produced artist, who are selling on the net...?
what they gotta sell analogue cd's, it ain’t gonna fly.
everywhere in the states kids burn, it ain’t gonna stop.
the old fogies will die off, their bullcarp will rust and fade away.

(Ain't is a contraction originally for "am not" and "are not", but now typically meaning "is not", "am not", "are not", "has not", or "have not". Recently it has also been used as a contraction of "did not", as in I ain't know that. The word is a perennial issue in English usage.)

You sound vaguely but disturbingly like an anarchistic would-be-poet.

*chuckles*

no not completely, but not asleep either.

well maybe a little, but I am all for the one world government if done right....hehe]

there is a limit to copy-ing that should be observed, if you are honestly making a back up then it should be fine but if your selling copys then to jail with ya.
