That is what I've been trying to do... With little success. The offical NVIDIA kernel moduel fails to compile.

Do they say what kernel sources are required to compile against? And for that matter, are you sure you have the kernel-source package installed?

I'm not sure... I do have the kernel sources the installer asks for, but it seems to be missing something else, causeing kbuild to fail. I posted the logfile earlier in the topic...

EDIT:

Note that linking of the kernel interface (in the case that the interface was downloaded or compiled at installation) requires you to have a linker installed on your system. The linker, usually /usr/bin/ld, is part of the binutils package. If a precompiled kernel interface is not found, you must install a linker prior to installing the NVIDIA driver.

Might this be the problem?

EDIT: No it is not... Going to try copying fixdep from another source.

EDIT III: Another file missing... I'm begning to think I selected the wrong path for the kernel source...

EDIT IV: It appears to be a config file.

W00T!!!! Proper resoulation, 3d support... It's working! glxgears gets 3114 FPS. Thanks for the help all...

Glad you got it working!

I highly recommend installing the 'advanced user' tools if you have the disk space. Not only are they fun and useful, they're also pretty comprehensive and come in handy in a pinch. If you read random tips on forums, you might lack the utils that they use, but if you install that package, chances are you'll have them.

Excellent!

For my 3D, it was beyond easy. One little checkbox in SaX2 - of course, the driver isn't the absolute best for my card, but it does the job in a pinch. I was actually surprised at how decent the intel integrated graphics were!

So how do you like SUSE's desktop? Their KDE is one of the most functional and pretty KDE's I've seen. Granted, it's probably not going to be as pretty as a decent GNOME, but it's tons more functional... Oh, check out amaroK if you haven't already.

GNOME has never seemed pretty to me... You can do far more with KDE, with the right configurations. There are far more themes for KDE, and it is easier to change icons.

Well, the Intel drivers are entirely open source... Nice of Intel in this reguard.

The desktop and window manager system is nice... Espically now that I have it up to the laptop's native reasoulation. I have used amaorK a bit. Almost seems superior to Windows Media Player... I'll have to mess around with it a bit more.

Actually, SUSE 10.1 is pre-Intel drivers, so these were the community open source drivers.

And Amarok is quite awesome.

Windows Media Player is... yuck.

Well, I am certainly cured of curiosity regarding Freespire. I have what is probably one of the most Linux-friendly laptops in the world, and it cannot configure even a simple ethernet card! I was expecting that wireless would have trouble, but just about any OS can cooperate with on-board Gigabit ethernet! And, what they did to the K-Menu, Kicker, and icon set are just yecch.

Well, on a typical GNOME and KDE system, it is certainly true that you can do much more with KDE, but it is also true that GNOME usually appears less cluttered. For precisely the same reason, of course. And this fluidity and lack of status bars, to name an example, usually translates to a more harmonious appearance. At least, for me, and some GNOME fans.

Don't get me wrong, I use KDE on a day-to-day basis and wouldn't switch to GNOME. But I still think the GNOME interface is prettier. My favorite interface is the shell, and one of the prettiest too. My least favorite interface, yet the prettiest, is Aqua.

gnome is prettier and easier configured than kde
I've never had problems with gnome-panel as a program, but I have had numerous problems with kicker
konqueror is nicer than nautilus, but nautilus looks nicer

edit: there really isnt a major difference in what you can do in kde vs. gnome is there?
just install core kde packages and you can run kde programs in gnome, and visa vera
kde uses konqueror for filemanager and kicker for taskbar
gnome uses nautilus and gnome-panel
there are some various config tools that vary, but other than that...?
