The Greeks coined the term atom, but not in the modern meaning -- the very word means "indivisible", hence terms like "atomic". Whereas the entire work on nuclear energy is based on the very act of dividing them.

So... this Court rules that the Defendant's joke is upheld. Case dismissed. Appeals may be submitted within two weeks.

I agreed that there were no nukes yet Beatles, he said that no one knew what an atom was, and I was saying they did, because the greeks coined the term.

An atom in the modern sense is still much the same as what the greeks came up with. The modern definition of it is: The smallest division of an element that is still considered an element. It's not indivisable, but if you do divide it, it's no longer that element.

Your decision is overruled by a higher Court. We rule in favor of the Prosecution.

The biology/prevet major has spoken, so mote it be. :P

The Greeks did not define element as we do: fire, earth, air, etc. To them, an atom was the smallest unit of matter. To us, if that concept exists at all, it's the Planck length. Are you asking the honourable Jury to believe that the Greeks considered the concept of an element?

Motion to send this to a higher Court.

But they still thought of Elements, even if they weren't defined the same way, they were still the fundamental building blocks of the universe, just as our modern elements are. Quarks and Planck lengths don't count becuase while they may be smaller than an atom, they aren't specifically any type of matter. A hydrogen atom is the smallest amount of hydrogen that you can have and still call it hydrogen, still be a specific type of matter. We can't be sure, but I bet they would have thought in terms of an "atom of Fire", not an "atom of matter". I don't know if they even thought of "matter" in the same way we do. As in, matter vs. energy, and matter vs. antimatter.

Motion blocked.

I won't argue with you as this is a joke and I don't agree with you, but am too tired to debate it. Motion dropped.
