I think a historical theme would be great!
But forr the original question...
A lot of us have homework! and other important stuff, and we don't have the oppertunity to play for 4 hours a day. *laughs*
But a complete game guide is a must!!! I have been telling my friends about it and they started redwall, they have almost no clue on how to play since the current game guide is not that clear.

please dont bite my head off for suggesting this. But a Star Wars based Prom might attract some attention. Especially if you get permission from lucasarts to do it. I've thought about creating one myself just havn't so maybe you guys could use my Idea.

Maybe you could try and attach yourslef to a better series of fantasy books.
Any George R. R. Martin fans?
Doubt that would actually work but I know they have an active community, not sure if the game would have mass appeal there.
One problem all promisances have is good players pwn noobs, and then noobs log into their empire in ruins and never come back, I know theres new player protection, but maybe new player bonus, more turns or something.
Although people who have played for a while , would be jerks and pretend there new to get more turns.
There's nothing wrong with the interface, the gameplay is obviosuly ok enoguh to get people hooked, since were here discussing thsi and there has been massive player bases in the past, so I guess the problem is stagnation.
Im not sure changing the enviroment of the game would neccesarily work, im not saying it definately wouldnt, just that when you start playing you tend to after a while ignore the minor details, well not ignore, jsut focus on them obejectively rather than subectively.
I think enough new players sign up to the games, but not enough come back for more. one thing is you rarely find a player who can jsut rocket up the ranking with a good strat, it takes a few rounds, people wont to be able to kick ass in some form straight away, whcih brings us back to the core problem of there not being enough players, specifically in this case enough crap players down the bottom who can have some fun amongst themselves.
Well I think all I did was trun around in circles, but maybe thats what needs to be done, look back at what made the game popular in the first place, instead of what might, then enhance what is already known.
edit: wow didnt realise this thread hasnt been active for like2 years ..oh well

I think part of it is a need for people to be taught. If they start out with a good teacher who can give them the basics of a good strat, they are probably more likely to say "hmm, all I need is some practice" and stick around, rather the leave in frustration.
However, I also think a lot of people these days don't want a teacher... so if your people lack both humility and determination, well... they don't stick around. That's one of the best parts of having friends bring people over - they have the friend who brought them to not only teach them, but also as an incentive to stick around.

Indeed. I would have been discouraged and not be as good as I am if not learning from Nohc, Rudder, Nuke, and Beatles when I played with them.

I must say, I had three VERY GOOD teachers, two of them were leaders of the clan I was in at the time of the game... one was Boar the Fighter, he was the first one to teach me a basic strat... which I later improved on with Ruddertail's (he's one of the others who helped me) help.
Also Corban/The Long Patrol taught me LOADS of stuff when he was leader of the clan I was in sitting in top spot.

Meh, I really never had a "teacher" either. Learned some from others, but not until I had a good bit of experience under my belt. Mostly time wasted, but, eh I learned some on my own... some from forum posts, some from other people...
But I had the determination, and it sounds like Arty had that too - even when you're not doing well, tough it out. If someone has either training or tenacity, they're in good shape. If they lack both, they won't likely stick around.
