Random... Churchill speech of 1946 about a possible "United States of Europe". The interesting thing isn't that, which wasn't a new concept, but how precisely he predicted each step of the way. Partnership between France and Germany, regaining of France's elevated status, formation of a Council of Europe and later an actual organization such as the EU, proliferation of nuclear technology, the general structure of a possible "United States of Europe" w.r.t. smaller states, etc.

About the only things that he did not predict were the disintegration of the British Commonwealth as a meaningful force, and that France would regain its status so quickly it would try to dominate Europe (leading to the splits, the EFTA and the EEC, etc. etc. -- silly French).

Mind you, all this in 1946. Not bad for someone born over a century before the federation he predicted would come into existence.

Meh. Not like it wasn't possible. Name one continent other than Australia that isn't made up of multiple countries. Yeah... Weird we got stuck with only 3 here.

The EU might have happened back then even. It was the Cold War that stopped it from happening, really. If the Soviet Union hadn't started gobbling up Eastern European countries, they might have been able to build a United States of Europe.

But yes, that is eerily prophetic.

Australia was never a country from the beginning, it was divided by many states and territories. and even before that the aborigines who lived in the continent were never united. Australia was brought together as a nation in 1900 with the constitution of Australia.
