Yes, I know. Unfortuneatly I am working with a character already heavily modified by another DM (like, 20 years ago). I have yet to see the stat sheet so I am treading water on the stats until that time (some things I have to see to believe). From what I understand this is a level 24 character (I think I may down that slightly).
Oh, alright. Wow, lvl 24? Then Helm would know who she is, like I said, epic level characters have world-wide renown. If you'll modify Timon's post so he knows who Helm is and is at least mildly impressed at meeting him, I'll modify Helm's post so that he knows who Clyaette is, and is at least mildly impressed at meeting her.
In short, bear with me...I will mod the character when I see the stats to know what I am working with.
OK.
Another thing to remember, in aD&D, the DM is god. The rulebooks leave all rules open for modification and adaptation. I try to go easy on this (unless I broach new territory), but some DM's do not. The two characters I have just introduced are both vastly modified (Clench has a charisma of -14 I think [yes that is negative 14] which is not possible by rulebook standards, but then again neither is a hag/troll [or may I add a half-ogre lol]).
Right, I know. I'm not a rules lawyer, but I do like it when DM's follow most of the rules of the game system.
Oh, and I've a post coming up for Dyrn, but I don't have the time right now, just letting you know.

what the heck is a 15th level character, NPC or PC doing commanding epic level characters?
In answer to your question, I have left a lot out of Timon's history which will be revealed later. The King (for reasons of his own) trusts him implicitly and has assigned him command of this mission.
Also, I was not expecting a level 20 character to join this campaign when I started it.
Something to remember (story wise)...The King asked for Helm's help, not Timon. King's do not always think about the consequences of their actions. They just do...then expect everything to work out fine (I think that's realistic). The King (man I need to name him) has just created a lopsided situation we will have fun with for the rest of the campaign.
Perhaps the king was thinking of Helm as sort of a bodyguard for Timon. I mean (really) he is not intelligent or charismatic enough for an expedition command anyway (If you study the training for an officer in the military, you will understand this. It is a fact that the enlisted people are usually more adept at the specific jobs that need to be done. The officers are chosen and trained for leadership skills, not job skills or individual fighting skills.) Helm has the expertise and disposition of maybe a Sergeant Major [nearly the highest enlisted position in a regiment].
Remember this is an RPG. You are supposed to pretend you are your character. Lopsided situations occur every day in real life. How do you handle them? You cannot argue with a storyteller about the circumstances, for there is none...so you just live with them.
I am not saying you should ignore the circumstance, just have fun with it (what is the purpose of a game anyway?). How would Helm react to Timon's leadership? I think we could have fun with this head-butting ritual throughout the rest of the game, don't you?
In short, real life doesn't always work like its supposed to, so neither will this game. Let's just have fun following the roles we are playing. (I think it's better to let the characters but heads and argue than to do so ourselves lol.)

OK, fair enough. Figuring out the mystery is half the fun anyway.
Also, I was not expecting a level 20 character to join this campaign when I started it.
Yeah, I can see that. LOL.

Hmm, good points. The conflict between Helm and Timon will make for a fun and interesting byplay throughout the story. As long as it doesn't get out of hand.
Perhaps the king was thinking of Helm as sort of a bodyguard for Timon.
Yeah, king's aren't all that bright at times.

Well, yes, in a real military Helm would not be of officer rank. In the barbarian world he lives in, fighting skill=position of leadership. It's going to be interesting resolving that dichotomy. Especially since the party members in his previous experience usually let him take a leading roll. (Of course he didn't realize that in a dudgeon crawl when you have no thief, the meat shield goes first. LOL)

I'd agree with that.

Yeah, I know. It just bothers me is all.

Heh, OK.

FYI, I did mention in Timon's thoughts that he recognized at least Helm's name. For reasons of his own (maybe because he wants to impress the king with his poise) he supressed his reactions.
The reaction was nearly meant to be (nonchalont, that is). Timon treats all people the same until he sees them in action. You will probably notice a change after the first few fights we have...we will be at that point in a few minutes.
Oh, OK, I suppose that's a reasonable view to take. Are we going to be rolling dice, or simply RPing fights? If we are going to be rolling dice, where and how will we be rolling them for these fights? Also, are we going to be using mook rules for the epic level characters?
It is said that when Rincewind dies, the occult ability of the human race will go UP by a fraction. -Terry Pratchett
Dice would be too complicated for the forum based game (I think it would take days to complete this one simple fight). I like to keep things simple, so if you know the result of your actions, describe them. If not, leave the post open-ended and I will describe the result.
In other words simply describe your character swinging his sword and the enemies attempting to block/parry/dodge/ripost/whatever. Keep it an even mix, though.
What I meant by untoucheable is some have a tendency to imagine the enemies just sitting there and letting you hit them. You will miss, you will be hit, you will be wounded (probably not in this battle, I decided to go easy the first time). The most danger you probably will face for a while is overconfidence (aka. critical miss/hit self).
Just keep it fair and act as though you are writing a story. Maybe my example will help you a little.
Alright then. I'll try to keep it even, though most fights with Helm have been over by round three, if not sooner. The wereboars don't really stand a chance against him, unless he critically fumbles a roll, his attack bonus alone pretty much ensures a hit. Since we're not rolling, I'll just be doing it by random chance, he'll miss one hit this fight. Probably none the next fight though. I tend to roll well with Helm.
I gave everyone credit for their kills, and simply had Helm wipe out the remainder.

Nicely done...however D'argash didn't manage to get out completely unscathed. I just hadn't got that far yet. I will fix this in my next post, buy yours might require an edit too...
