Either 1) Somebody takes them down, 2) They get bored and start fighting among themselves, or 3) Everyone else gets bored and leaves.

The problem is the other guys, Maddog. Even if somebody hits you, they still need a lot of cash stored up before they can use you as a springboard to go against the other guys... and just grabbing your land without enough cash to make a go of things will likely only result in your clanmates taking it, thus rendering it inaccessible.

Rudder, you and I have both taken down clans and emp bigger and badder than there are right now. It's a lack of effort. Well that and an organized resistance.
