With permission I would quote from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince:

With a little ingenious counting we see that 3 'Horcruxes' have been accounted for: i.e.
* diary
* ring
* locket
(Gee, sounds like a mystery novel.)

At any rate, that means that there are a total of 7 'Horcruxes' that are external to the evil dude. And there's a bit of soul in the evil dude as well, which Harry refers to:

then I've got to go after the seventh bit of Voldemort's soul, the bit that's still in his body

Which is the 8th soul-object. I.e. Harry indexes from zero.

the locket hasn't been destroyed yet though, I thought the 7th horcrux WAS voldemort's body... (or in it, or whatever) did you mean there are 8 horcurxes? or did I read it wrong...

the 7th was never made according to dumbledore M_M remember he said "Voldemort reserved horcruxes to represent important deaths. So he saved the 7th for you" but he died trying to kill harry which means he didnt make a seventh so 7th piece of the soul is in the body
