I was thinking the other nite about my Science Olypiad astronomy event. I was trying to decide if the universe was infinite or closed.

My reasoning led me to 4 conclusions...

1) The Universe is infite and the amount of matter is infinte as well. People are a fluke because the probablility of any matter existing at any point is a non-zero number. Or is is 100%?

2) The univese is infinite and the amount of matter is defined. So now the probabilty of matter existing at any point is a non-zero number.

3) The universe is finite and matter is infinite. This really can't happen because there would be no vaccuum of space.

4) The universe and matter are limited. Making the probabilty of life unifomally equal throughout the universe. So why'd it only really take off here?

Anybody have any ideas or am I crazy?

How do I know that you were really "thinking"?You should make up your own mind. Where did you get your
reasoning led him or her to 4 conclusions? One what? They take some getting used to. I think so, but I'm not sure.

Ask John Lennon
if it is. As Bertrand Russel said, it must have taken ages for people to realize that a brace of pheasants
and a couple of days are both instances of the number "two. "Um, Why now? I think probabilty of matter existing at any point is a non-zero number is more than that.
Just three? Can we get back to business?
Is this a math question? Are we still talking about really can not happen because there would be no vaccuum of space?
Ah. What do you look like?
My brain pattern set does not have a response for that.
""? blink?

all about FAVRE, come on...you know you want to click it

..."I'm sorry, but I really can't see anything redeeming in your philosophy other than that dinosaurs are cute."
~Beatles

The Kraken, which is found primarily in Scandinavian myth, was a huge sea creature. It was said to lie at the bottom of the sea for a long time and then it would rest at the surface....Like the Midgard serpent in the Norse myths, the Kraken was supposed to rise to the surface at the end of the world.

I guess in No. 2, you mean "finite" instead of "defined". But please be precise, imprecision is antisocial. And the overall probability of matter at any point in such a case is indeed zero.

Also about No. 1, you can't tell. See the rationals and the reals for an interesting view at this.

Also, I don't understand your conclusion in No. 4. If the universe and the amount of matter are both finite, good, but we still can't say anything about the probability of life. Consider a universe in which it all started with some explosion in a corner of it. Well, the probability is higher of life evolving nearer to that corner than farther from it, right? But even if the probability of life appearing is uniform, 1. it may have "taken off" somewhere else as well, but we haven't communicated, and 2. there is nothing special about "here": we are in fact a remote little random corner of the universe.

yeah. 'here' is a relative word
we dont really know much about our own universe, much less the innumerable others lurking out there.. there could very well be other civilizations more or less advanced than ours out there, but the distance it would take to travel to them (or visa versa) is still very very great..

heck, we dont even know our own planet yet.. they found a fuzzy lobster about a year ago (just released a few weeks ago though)

I dont like infinity, it hurts my head
but if you assume everything has an end, then one must ponder what is beyond that end, surely a new beginning is beyond that end? thus, for the sake of avoiding a 'universe within a universe' type thing, we'll say ours in boundless

if the conservation of mass can be applied outside our world, then matter is neither created nor destroyed, meaning it is finate. if there is a finate amount of matter within a boundless space then the precent of mass to space is finate / infinate, the limit of which is equal to zero. there was a point to that, but it got lost in space

I mean in a non-specific sence.

Well, In 4. a finite amount of mass and space; I figure that the probabilty of matter being at any one point in space is equal to the amount of matter:amount of space. So as you say that this amount of matter should exist in this amount of space should become less and less probabile. Yes? Your corner arguement is flawed. Where ever the big bang happened would be the center of the universe. There is no set boundy before this. The inital explosion created 1. A linear disk of matter or 2. A sphere of matter. Less matter is going to be on the edges because the combined gravity would pull it in. I have theorized that in fact, that universe is actually multiple "rings" not one continous space.

It would look like this (leading edge) | || ||| |||| ||| || | (Inside toward origin)
All the matter would be pulled toward the center. The leading edge would be pulled to the back and the back to the front. Leapfrogging, so to speak. The shape of the universe would be uniform and the "rings" would be connected. You would just have spaces of emptyness between the layers.

So...The probability of people existing or a planet is indeed very small. Prolly near a non-zero number.

The law of conservation of mass is dumb because how did all this stuff form if there was nothing to begin with? Nothing blows-up into universe...O_o

Lastly, Yes. Infinity is dumb. Infinity/Infinity is not one...Bluh? Same as 0/0 does not equal 1. Infinity makes the world a'splode.
