Hmm... I have an idea as regards that.
We keep the original name and igname in the database, and let a user make changes to them through the Manage panel. If the levenshtein* of the new and original is not between 1 and 2, we reject it. This can be exploited, of course, but is relatively harmless, and people will be able to recognize the original. Also, must check it for swearing again. Ditto for clan names, by the way.
This is simple to implement, but it's not high priority.
