I recently acquired an old Dell Dimension XPS R400 (400mhz P2) and I'm thinking about gutting it and building a lowend box off it. Powersupply is fine, fans and case design are good enough. So... motherboard, processor, ram, hdd, and a vid card

I havnt played with building a box in a while
I would have, honestly, liked to have been able to just buy a nicer mac.. but mac resale prices are insane and the mac mini is their most overpriced piece of hardware for what you get.
Point of this box is to give me something modern to play with (my main boxes are all 2001, laptop is now 4 years old) but to keep costs down

Or you could do what my dad's work mate did and spot a laptop in someone's bin poking out of the top then nick off with it... Only thing is the screen is buggered, so he gave it me, and I'm gonna flog it for £100, then charge another £25 to fit the screen when he buys one - but even then, it's not bad, it's a pretty old laptop but they go for about £200-£350 on eBay. 2.8GHz Celeron processor, 256MB RAM, 30GB HDD, CD-RW - might be a DVD-RW in fact, I've not really looked... Floppy drive, it's fairly heavy compared to my laptop, but then some of the same models of my laptop go on eBay for over £1,000 so..... not bad for a first laptop for someone really.
